Souljourner and the Measurement of Human Flourishing

Executive summary. Human flourishing is measured today in pieces: clinics track disease, employers track output, and no one tracks whether the whole person is holding together. Souljourner is a non-clinical instrument, built within the Standard Coherence Fidelity Layer (SCFL), for measuring interior coherence across those pieces. Coherence is the degree to which the relationships within a system mutually hold one another in place. Applied to a person, that means the relationships among body, attention, values, and the people around them. This paper describes the problem, the measurement approach, how it adapts to different populations, and what remains to be validated. It makes no clinical or predictive claims.

The problem: flourishing measured in silos

Each institution that touches a person's well-being measures only its own output, so a decline that crosses domains is seen late or not at all. A nurse heading toward burnout may show normal labs, adequate productivity, and steady attendance until several of those break at once.

DimensionPrimary institutionWhat it measuresWhat it misses

Mental and emotionalClinical psychologyDiagnostic codesPositive structure and purpose, not only disorder
RelationalCivic and social organizationsParticipation countsDepth of trust and reciprocity
Narrative and purposeFaith and philosophical communitiesAttendance, affiliationFragmentation of meaning in daily life

None of these measures is wrong. The gap is that nothing reads the relationships between them, which is where structural strain first appears.

SCFL as an upstream measurement layer

SCFL is a substrate-agnostic measurement layer for structural integrity and recoverability in coupled systems. It has been applied to power grids, banking, reinsurance, and maritime networks; Souljourner is its interior, human-scale branch, and in fact where UCMS began.

The philosophical grounding for the interior work draws on Julian of Norwich, whose account of a self held together in relationship anticipates the relational definition of coherence used throughout.

Souljourner: an interior coherence instrument

Souljourner turns timestamped observations of a person's life into structural readings of interior coherence. A software developer has assessed the full Stage 1 architecture as buildable in about one year.

  1. Ingest. Physiological signals (heart-rate variability, sleep), behavioral patterns, self-reported reflective states, and environmental context, each timestamped.
  2. Measure. Read coherence across domains and at the seams between them, as of each point in the series, not only in hindsight.
  3. Reflect back. Show the person or cohort where their structure is holding and where it is straining, in plain terms.
  4. Support small realignments. Offer low-friction behavioral, relational, or reflective adjustments, chosen by the person, not prescribed.

Souljourner is a non-clinical instrument. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace care, and any use alongside clinical settings would be framed as research under appropriate review.

Narrative and relational coherence

Meaning and relationship are treated as structure that holds a person together, not as soft extras. Both can be observed over time.

Narrative coherence is the alignment between what a person says matters and how they actually spend attention. A widening gap between the two is one of the seams Souljourner watches.

Relational coherence recognizes that no one is coherent alone. A person's structure depends on the relationships around them, read along three lines:

Cohort adaptation

The measurement stays the same across populations; what changes is which domains and seams matter most for each. The table below is a working hypothesis to be tested, not a calibrated result.

Organizational MRI

The same measurement scales from a person to a team or institution. An Organizational MRI aggregates anonymized readings to show where an organization's structure is holding and where it is straining.

The aim is to surface structural problems, such as unsustainable operating rhythms or breakdowns between teams, while there is still room to act, rather than learning of them through turnover or litigation. Drift plates from Organizational MRI work have already been produced within the SCFL program; they are measurements, with decision thresholds not yet set.

Aggregation would be anonymized and governed so that the instrument reads structure, not individuals.

Simulation, kept separate from measurement

Souljourner also includes a simulation layer for exploring “what if” scenarios. Simulation and measurement follow different rules, so they are kept apart: measurement requires observed values, while simulation explores possibilities.

Simulated outputs are labeled as such and are never presented as measurements or forecasts.

Evidence status and scope

Souljourner’s architecture is specified and published; its human-scale readings have not yet been independently validated. Stating this plainly is part of the method.

Falsification criteria for each test will be fixed in advance and published before data are collected.

Research roadmap

The next step is a pre-registered pilot with a healthcare-worker cohort, because burnout in that group is costly, measurable, and well studied.

  1. Pre-register. Deposit the pilot protocol on Zenodo, with hypotheses and falsification criteria fixed before any data are collected.
  2. Calibrate on existing data. Use historical datasets to test whether the cohort weightings in this paper hold up.
  3. Run a 90-day pilot. A closed trial with a healthcare-worker cohort, testing whether structural readings move before self-reported exhaustion, and by how much.
  4. Seek independent replication. Invite an outside research group to rerun the analysis on its own cohort.
  5. Publish everything. Report results, including null and negative findings, in the open canon.
